How often should an AED be checked?
Ensuring Your Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is ready to save lives
Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are essential medical devices that can save the lives of people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. However, like other equipment, AEDs need regular maintenance and monitoring to ensure they function in an emergency.
How often should you check your AED?
Automatic Self-Tests are a standard feature of most AEDs, which perform self-tests at regular intervals, usually every 24 hours. The self-test includes checking the device's internal components, battery status, and electrode pad connectivity. In addition to the automatic self-test, we recommend performing the following monthly checks:
- Perform a visual check of the device, looking for any damage or missing parts.
- Check the battery level according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
- Inspect the AED pads to ensure they are sealed and within their expiration date.
- Inspect any spare AED pads to ensure they are sealed and within their expiration date.
- Check that all necessary accessory equipment is present, such as a towel, razor, CPR face shield, scissors, gloves, and paperwork.
- Check the AED cabinet is secure and not damaged.
- We've created a free monthly checklist to help you keep your AED in top shape.
Why is AED maintenance important?
Maintaining an AED is crucial because over 50% of AEDs are not ready to use when needed, and the most common reason for this is forgetting to replace spare parts periodically. To prevent this, we offer a Bronze AED maintenance plan that provides an AED status overview in the Service Portal and tracks the lifespan of batteries and electrodes. When the expiration date approaches, we automatically send you spare parts with a guaranteed 10% discount.
Free replacement of spare parts
In the event of a malfunction, you can use a loan AED while your device is undergoing repairs. Additionally, if your AED has been deployed, the Bronze plan guarantees new electrodes and a battery (if needed) free of charge, ensuring that your device is always ready for use when needed.
